| Are there any annuals that flower in winter? I am trying to get the garden to have some flowers year round and I have some good shrubs but wonder if there are any annuals that can be relied on for winter flowers.
Thanks |

Here are some annuals that were blooming for me last winter: Stocks, wallflowers, polyanthus (or any primulas really), violas, pansies, and cyclamens, but they aren't really annuals!! Sow now to get colour until the Spring bulbs bloom. It might be a good idea to do a seperate indoor sowing later on to get blooming annuals through Spring. Does this help? Lauren, who is at uni and supposed to be doing work! :-) |

| Lauren, it's not hard to find a distraction - any distraction. While I once commented to someone that pansies were "grannies' flowers", they really do put on a good show right through Winter. And another non-annual that is good value is Chrysanthemums. |

| Yes, I was thinking about 'non annuals' that bloom in Winter after I sent that reply. There's Cyclamens, Bergenias, Daphne, Crocuses sometimes, Hellebores (lots of different colours these days), Red hot pokers (Kniphofia), Anemones. You really have the potential to creat drifts of flowers in Winter, even if they aren't strictly winter flowering (eg Crocuses are supposed to be spring flowering, but come so early it's still Winter, and Anemones are supposed to be Autumn flowering but often extend right into Winter, like mums). I have a Nerine called Winter Cheer that supposedly blooms in Winter, I'll let you know what happens in the next few months! Cheers, Lauren |

| Last year I sowed Clarkia seeds in March and they were flowering by early June, and lasted till October. By the way, I'm in Sydney, so I suppose they'd behave differently in Canberra. This March I sowed Shirley Poppy seeds and they're growing nicely. I hope they'll be this year's winter annual. |
