mealy bugs in geraniums

Today I found mealybugs in a lot of the flower heads of the ivy geraniums that have taken over the common garden area of the building where I live. This garden is my pride and joy. It was just a mass of stones, cigarette butts and weeds when I decided to transform it. It now looks great - lush and green, with vibrant electric cerise and red flowers, but the sight of these mealy bugs has really thrown me.

I'm game for getting out the cotton buds and metho to try get rid of them in small plants in pots - and even then I don't fancy my chances. But this is a really big area.

Can anyone advise me on what to do? I'm not really keen to throw a lot of chemicals around, but I will if I have to.

I live in the inner west of Sydney, if that indicates any special treatment.

Try warm, soapy water. If that doesn't look as though it's making an impact, add some metho to the mix.

Mealy bugs also hide in the soil so you may have to use a combination of spraying "inside" the plant and applying with a bucket.

Mealy bugs like warm, still environments. Perhaps a little judicious pruning to improve air flow might help, as will the relief from the recent heatwave conditions.

I remember once having the pesky things and reading that they go into the roots of the potplants and I had to repot a couple. But it was not a large area and meths worked.
