| What do I need to do, my Gardenias are lovely and healthy and glossy green with heaps of buds. BUT they seem to dry up before they reach the opening stage. We are justy coming out of a very hot summer. At no time did they look like they were affected by the heat or hot winds. Do hope some one can help me. Sheena |

Hi Sheena and Yoshi, Having had other gardenia problems this season and I consulted a book called Allan Seale's Garden Doctor. There are a couple of things he mentions re bud drop/flowers falling which may or may not help you. 1.Flower fall may be due to cold nights following bud formation or in some cases to heatwave conditons. In the latter case keep plant well watered during hot conditions. 2.Bud drop, with fleshy stem at base of flower girdled or chewed is the result of the gardenia or brown vegetable weevil." He suggests two pesticides to combat this Endosulfan and Carbaryl, - presumably there would be a non-toxic solutions as well. |

RE: Gardenia Problems

| I planted 3 True Love gardenias and 2 Floridas on the same bed a week ago and have 2 problems affecting only the True Loves: 1) The buds which did form to a good size went dark brown then fell off. When I bought the plants, the buds were fine but a few days after planting, they started to turn this dark brown - the whole bud, not just the outer petals or edges! 2) Some leaves started to yellow. They would turn a solid yellow atarting at the tip to the base, without the green veins rather than a gradual yellowing of the whole leaf. I read that treating with iron chelate is the solution so this is what I've done even though there is next to no veining of the leaves - just go bright yellow. I don't know what is the cause of the blackening of the buds, though, so I hope someone knows how to treat this as the plants have several buds on them. The 2 Floridas look alright so far but I did see some young leaves at the base of one of them starting to yellow too. Buds are too small yet to know if they will escape the same plight as the True Loves. Before planting, I conditioned the soil with an improver for Azaleas & Camellias which I was told could be used for gardenias as well. I used a fertiliser for those types as well then spread peat mulch. I live in Perth and the soil is very alkaline. I measured the Ph and after conditioning it showed 6.0 - is this enough for gardenias? |

| I planted 2 True Loves last Saturday, however mine are in pots. The buds haven't gone brown at all, but some of the leaves are bright yellow like yours. I used the azalea and camelia potting mix which is supposed to be fine for gardenias also. I am hoping the yellow leaves are just a sign that the plant is adjusting to being repotted and once settled in it will be fine. I can't imagine it would be lacking anything so quickly after being repotted. I will just have to wait and see I suppose. |

A while ago, on Gardenweb, there was an hilarious thread on the problematic Gardenia. Thank goodness, it has been preserved for posterity... Rose-Marie |

Hi, Some of my gardenias have flowered but after two or so days the blooms go yellow. They are true loves. Is this normal? jan |

| That is perfectly normal for gardenia flowers which is such a shame when they take so long to open. if the weather isn't too warm they take a few days to yellow, but if it's hot, one or two days is about it. |

Thanks Vee71. I had these (yellowing ones) in the ground on the sunnier side and the true love on the slightly shadier side in a pot, stayed white. maybe this site is better suited but I can't very well dig them out again because I'll have empty spaces jan |
