Suggestion: A Separate 'Bulbs' Forum
| | |
Posted by ilijasx Vic Aust (My Page) on Sun, Feb 2, 03 at 22:56
| I've been thinking (first time's always the hardest!) that perhaps rather than having so many different types of plants all in the one forum that we may have a new forum for bulbs created.
This would save the perennials forum from being clogged up and would also make it easier for people to navigate.
I've already thrown this suggestion to the webmaster and he has suggested that I put the debate on the open floor, so to speak.
What does everyone think of this idea?

| An excellent idea. The sooner the better. |

| I would love it, particularly with spring bulb planting time coming up soonish. I think it is a terrific idea! |

| I would not have thought this forum is busy enough for a split. There is already an active Australian Bulbs forum on another site that can't be mentioned here. If you go to the Australian Bulb Association Web site at the linkbelow, you will find links to the forums. A lot of very knowledgable growers hang out there. There is an associated images forum. Both are quite active. There is also an excellent "magazine" and forum site on Alpines and Bulbs run by an Australian and having a lot of active and helpful members. Go to any good search engine and type in "Bulb beds in a hurry" - including the quote marks - and then take the first link to see a recent contribution.. There is such a wealth of information already there that I can't imagine anyone could replicate it. Questions there never go unanswered and often start long and interesting threads (with pictures). I don't have any financial or other interest in these sites and I'm not trying to undermine GardenWeb. But if the community is split between too many sites, we'll miss a lot. And why reinvent the wheel? Paul |

I agree with Paul. This forum is sooo slow that any questions about bulbs are going to hang around for some time. Bulbs are perennials. I grow plenty of both. Where do you draw the line as to what is a bulb and what is a perennial. For instance - a question on irises - dutch on the bulb forum, bearded here? Moraeas, dierama, daylilies, solomon's Seal, Lily of the Valley, Canna's, Calla's .... where would they go? Cheers, jan |

| Def a good site, PabloG. Looking forward to looking around later. I'd say if it has a bulb, corm, rhizome or tuber it could be in "bulbs", if not, a perennial. Just a suggestion. Ann |

| Some very good points that have been made here. Now that I've read them I'm not so convinced that a separate forum is needed that badly. Thanks for your feedback, everyone. Ilijasx. |

| I first had trouble finding posts on bulbs until I checked the search engine. They were listed under perennials and annuals which I thought was a bit weird. A 'Bulbs' forum could certainly define an area more clearly for plants suiting this classification. It doesn't matter if the boundaries are blurred between a bulb (rhizome/tuber/corm etc.) and a perennial/annual, as long as less informed people can find what they're looking for. It's all about convienence. Saintin |

Bulbs are perennials. An iris growing from a rhizome is a perennial but not a bulb. Since both are perennials, it would be easier to deal with both on the perennial forum. And since many people don't know the difference between bulbs, corms, rhizomes etc, then why specify bulbs? This forum gets very little traffic, it would be far better if people made more effort to post here, rather than on the Aussie gardens forum, when they have specific questions or discussions on bulbs and perennials. with a bulb forum AND a perennial forum, you will still find people post in the wrong place. |

Currently there are 3 messages on the 'main' forum that should be here - alstromaeria, storm lily, and bulb questions. The most recent new posting here was a week ago. Clearly people think they should post almost everything to the discussions forum. It would be silly to subdivide further when many people only bother to read the one forum. |

| Since my last post I reaalise that yep, this forum is quiet. But as others say, where do we draw a line and there is a Tropical Forum which surely includes a lot of "bulbs" said loosely. Maybe just a change of name to 'Perennials and Bulbs'? I also use the other sites. |

| I don't think our population is large enough to keep adding forums. So many of the already existing forums are fairly moribund. Everyone is enthusiastic at the beginning but as time goes on, stick mainly to the broader forums. |
