| I find a maddock extremely effective for splitting bulbs. Garden spades also work well. However, I've found that the bulbs don't grow so well afterwards. But then the garden inhabitants ganged up on me. I broke the maddock handle and bent the fork tines trying to dislodge some agapanthus. I heard them laughing!! I'd wait until winter to divide your hippies. Just carefully remove the new bulbs, trying not to damage the roots too much. If you wash the soil off first, you should have a better idea of where you are going with them. Trim off any damaged roots and replant with the neck of the bulb just above the surface. |

| Unless they are in a pot and getting a bit crowded, it isn't necessary to divide them (they naturally form clumps) unless you want to. As Wombat says, wait till they are dormant in say June or July, just dug up or tip out the plant and ease the babies off the parent, then re-plant. They probably won;t have much if any root system at that time. Replant with crown above ground level. |
