| It'll depend on what sort of iris and what part of queensland. Bearded Iris prefer cooler weather than Louisiana iris. For anything other than tall bearded you need a cold climate. Lots of frost. Tall bearded do OK in Sydney. If you're up in the mountain areas bearded might be OK. Otherwise go for the louisiana, which likes warm weather and lots of water. |

Yes - as Snodge says, Louisianna's will do best in your area. Assuming you have Bearded irises, they certainly don't like the shade, but if they are growing well in their new position, you should get some bloom. Tall Bearded iris are not so dependent on frost for bloom, as some of their shorter relatives. Go for those that bloom early in the season, and preferably buy from a Queensland grower, as you are more likely to get varieties which will bloom in your climate. They like a well drained soil, neutral or slightly alkaline. Give them a feed of lime in early winter, and some plant food (not too high in nitrogen) in late winter. If they are fed too much nitrogen they will produce lots of leaf, at the expense of flowers. Also make sure the rhizomes oren't covered by more than 1 cm of light soil, and not mulched, otherwise the sun cannot warm the rhizome in Autumn, to produce bloom in Spring. Water them from early Spring, once a week, if they are in a very dry situation, and maybe next Spring you will be lucky. Cheers, Jan Clark (Committee member - Victorian Iris Society) |

| I don't know what kind of Iris"s they are. I bought them at a Sunday Market in the southern suburbs of Brisbane, but thinking back they had blue with yellow flowers on them, when I got them is that any help. Their leaves only grow about 15 to 20 cms high. But I see I am dong the wrong things as up here its mulch, mulch and more mulch due to the low rainfall. I have probably planted them too deep also. Thank you both for your Help MM |

Blue with yellow describes so many different species of iris it is a bit like saying they had leaves :-) If you have louisianna iris, then mulch, mulch and more mulch is exactly what they like :-) Perhaps a photo on the gallery page? Too deep will be a big problem with any type of iris. Cheers, Jan |
