Problems with ginger plants

I am still having problems with my ginger plants. The strange powder has appeared again, and something appears to be boring holes into the plants. I have flowers, but the tops of the flower stems are pale and appear to have been eaten. I also noticed a pale spider on the plants, but am not sure if this is the culprit. I took some of the powder to a local nursery (where I had purchased one of the plants) but the man there was useless, he just shrugged. I have used pyrethreum, but it doesn't seem to be having any effect. My poor plants are not happy, but I don't know what to do.

Hardly likely to be a spider, sounds a bit like a grass hopper or similar. Have you been out to check on the plants at night with a torch? Many chewing insects attack under cover a darkness - it's a amazing what you can find with a torch chewing happily away at your precious plants. As for using pyrethrum, I never found it much good. I think there's not much you can do till you find the culprit and then decide on the remedy.

What sort of strange powder? Do you mean powdery mildew? Do you have european wasps where you are? They can bore into things and eat the insides without showing too much on the outside. What happens when you break open a plant with a hole in it? What do you find inside?

you have a borer. I treat with a systemic pesticide in spring after cutting out any affected stems and repeat the treatment through summer. The 'powder' is basically like sawdust but from the flesh of the stem. Feed more regularly as the removal of canes takes a lot away from the rhizomes.

Leaves are wilting and come loose from ground. Soil puffed up where leaves once were. This soil is wet and sticky. Isit root rot are what?
