Healthy flowering plants - however I'd thought portulacas loved the sun and planted them in an area with all-day sunshine. They open flower some days - usually uptill maybe lunchtime or such and then close up. They seem to be closed when the sun is at its best. What have other portulaca growers found to be their preferred conditions?

Yes, you are right regarding planting in a sunny spot - I haven't had your experience with portulaca. Couple of tips, don't overwater it and come winter, the plant will disappear if planted in the garden. Don't know why. Maybe someone more experienced can advise. Luckily, I took a piece of mine and planted it in a pot so still have it.

Maybe that's it - they might get too much of a good thing - watering. Thanks for your suggestions.

Something similar has happened to my portulacas, and I posted my concerns on the American annuals forum. What happened is that last year I bought portulaca seedlings from K Mart, and they stayed open all day, even in the shade, and they really made a nice display. They self-seeded, and their off-spring this year close up early - at around 2:00 p.m. The follow-ups I received were only guesses about why the self-seeded plants seemed inferior. Even weirder, the plants started out with a variety of colours this spring, and most have somehow decided to go an orangey red. A friend who was minding them while I was away for a while commented (independently) on this, so I'm not going nuts. They're also prone to mealy bug. I treat them with a cotton bud dipped in metho, as I'm not ready to get rid of them without a fight.

Thankyou for your thoughts - glad it's not only me experiencing these strange portulaca symptoms. I always thought of them as loving the hot sunshine and expected them open in it all day long...

I used an old wheel barrow to plant my seeds in and they flower in an amazing variety of colours with double and single flowers. Thought I'd lost them during the drought and wheeled the barrow out of the way until I could plant it with something else - then later I found they had come up from their seeds and made another fabulous display. Sometimes I throw a bit of animal manure on, or a shovel full of chooky droppings. They are parked out where they get sun with a sprinkling of shade at some time of the day and out here they are sprinkled every afternoon. Probably wouldn't need watering so often on the coast.Does anyone have any other perennial ones besides the double pink/white, purpley/red and single white? They are sooo good in hanging baskets and urns. Ducks.
