Cynara 'Dwarf Violet'

Hi all,

Don't know if anyone has heard of this type of ornamental globe artichoke (I think that's what they are!) but I've got one and it looks terrific. Been in flower -fruit' or whatever you would call it for about three weeks now but I'm not sure what I should do now. Should I remove the heads (3 of them) from the base or leave them on. The leaf is now starting to look a lot weaker and this appears due to all nutrients going to the heads. Should the foliage be cut back at any stage including over winter? Any advice would be appreciated. I would highly recommend this one as it's a beauty...

Garry, I had a look in GS Thomas' book on perennials and he suggests cutting out the flower stalk and letting the foliage develop. The plant will regrow in spring - protect from frost with straw. I planted mine in winter at Marysville after buying it bare-rooted!!! and it has done well.

Thanks for the advice and I've taken it, although it was pretty devastating to cut out that gorgeous flower stalk..I look forward to next years..
