Cynara 'Dwarf Violet'

| Hi all,
Don't know if anyone has heard of this type of ornamental globe artichoke (I think that's what they are!) but I've got one and it looks terrific. Been in flower -fruit' or whatever you would call it for about three weeks now but I'm not sure what I should do now. Should I remove the heads (3 of them) from the base or leave them on. The leaf is now starting to look a lot weaker and this appears due to all nutrients going to the heads. Should the foliage be cut back at any stage including over winter? Any advice would be appreciated. I would highly recommend this one as it's a beauty...

| Garry, I had a look in GS Thomas' book on perennials and he suggests cutting out the flower stalk and letting the foliage develop. The plant will regrow in spring - protect from frost with straw. I planted mine in winter at Marysville after buying it bare-rooted!!! and it has done well. |

| Lomatia Thanks for the advice and I've taken it, although it was pretty devastating to cut out that gorgeous flower stalk..I look forward to next years.. Garry |
