| I have a problem with some plants in my garden.
My Shasta Daisies are in bloom - I thought they flowered later than this but maybe I am wrong - but anyway some of them have opened up green. Yes the petals and the centre are green - not large frilly white petals with a smallish yellow centre but small petals and a large centre and all green.
Does anyone know what could cause this or do I put it down to the weather as we have with so many other things and hope they go back to their usual look next year?

It's called 'greening disease' and it spreads easily, so make sure you disinfect any gardening tools that came in contact with the plant. Unfortunately there isn't a cure. It's a horrible virus. Robyn

Ok, now that you have put the fear of whatsit into me and made me feel rather 'unclean'I need to know if it just stays in the one plant (in the clumps of Shastas - which even tho it will leave a big gap will be coming out in the morning) or will it spread to other plants nearby only if I have used tools in that area. The Shastas bloomed really well last year so much so I divided them and made several clumps and I haven't actually dug around those clumps as they shot up nice long stems with really big flower heads so apart from watering occasionally they have almost been 'mistreated'. Close by are Michelmas Daisies, Iris, Lavender, Campanula and also Roses - are any of these likely to suffer the same way? The MD have grown fairly high and look they have flower buds, the Irises bloomed well and haven't died down yet, the Lavender (Allardi) has fabulous long stems with flower heads and the Roses in that area flowered (so -so) but the correct colour. The tall Campanulas that actually flowered were a bit off but maybe lack of water early in the season could have been the reason. . So, apart from ditching them as suggested and cleaning all my tools is there anything else you can recommend. Don't say 'pray' or I'll thump you!!:) Cathy

Mine have done the same. I didn't know the cause so thanks for that. What about Gladioli? Some of those have green flowers too. Are they infected, does anyone know? Maddy

eweeeeeeee!! I had a rose that did that once and nursery man told me it was just a thing that happens especialy if thrip get into the bud, way before it opens. I was told not to worry. It came back next year fine. But maybe we be talking about two different greening things? Also had some iris that chucked a similar hissy fit and then found out that a person living under this same roof did spray them with roundup. Well I ask you, you'd go sort of green around the gills as well wouldn't you? Now this "greening disease" in Shasta's is entirely new to me. is it only endemic to Victoria??
