Ivy leafed geranium/pelargonium

I'm hoping someone will be able to clear up a few queries I have.

About 4 months ago I bought several pelargoniums in plastic pots. I repotted them into terracotta pots using ordinary (not premium) potting mix. Two of the repotted plants have flowered again and neither is the original colour I purchased. Another, a pink one called Patricia (I think this goes by another name as well) seems to be the original colour but possibly slightly darker. One of the two whose colours changed is called Tom Boy, and it was a very dark burgundy colour. It turned more puce/red/dark pink. I planted some cuttings of Tom Boy in a premium potting mix. One cutting has since flowered with a darker, closer to the original colour flower.

The other plant (don't know it's name) was originally a fairly pure red but turned puce.

In addition I have about 8 pots of ivy geraniums in plastic hanging baskets which I purchased as punnets. The pale pink seem true to the picture but the ones that were supposed to be red are puce/dark pink. These 8 geraniums are also in ordinary potting mix - I thought they weren't fussy about the soil.

It's pretty obvious that the soil has influenced the change of colour. I know about soil influencing colours of hydrangeas - is it the same with geraniums?

Does anyone have any ideas about what I might need to add to the soil to change the flower colour? I don't really want to have to repot them all!

Another query - The leaves of one of my nice double pelargoniums gradually turned yellow and now I think the plant has died. This seems to be happening to another one now - any ideas? It's in ordinaary potting mix in a terracotta pot and gets regular watering but dries out in between.

Soil does affect colour, even in garden plants, and the amount/type of fertiliser too. I noticed the other night that Fi from Groundforce said that terracotta pots need to be sealed on the inside first because they are so porous. Cuttings often grow tops before good root systems and this may be what happened to yours. I speak from experience! But why there should be such a colour change in reflowering plants beats me.

Amelie, when buying potting mix try and stay with certified mixes, eitheir regular or premium as long as they have the standards logo (tick) on them you know that they meet the minimum standard for potting mixes. Without the logo it's really a lucky dip.

Hi Origami_Master, I have nutmeg scented geranium, would you be interested? I could quick take cuttings and see which ones root up. It smells divine, and Richters says it has culinary uses too. It stays quite small but is one of my favourite things to brush up against in the winter. I also have culinary / hummingbird magnet, honey melon sage - these are already rooted. (super easy to overwinter and root). Or well rooted mojito mint cuttings. Hope some of these tempt you! The fern leaf geranium sounds so pretty. Cheers, BlueIris3

If I'm reading this correctly the flower has bloomed and you are left with the flower stem and potential seed pods. I don't know if hanging Geraniums make seeds because I remove mine when the flower is finished but that's what they are. Well like I said --just like regular zonal Geraniums you remove them back to the stem and do the same after the flowers yet to come have bloomed. Sometimes they flower beside tiny off shoots that will get large and make more flowers, so be careful just to remove the flower stem. Ivy leafed Geraniums will not give you a mass of flowers but it should have a continuous turnover of 3 or 4 flower stems at a time and the ivy shaped leaves are decorative in themselves

While the genera Geranium and Pelargonium are related, both being members of the family Geraniaceae, they are quite distinct. True geraniums, also known as cranesbills, referring to the shape of the fruit, for the most part have symmetrical flowers with ten fertile stamens. Most Pelargonium have bilaterally symmetrical flowers with up to seven of the ten stamens fertile. True Geraniums have a different seed dispersal technique than Pelargoniums. Geraniums fling their seeds away while Pelargonium seeds float away on the breeze and usually have a 'feathered ' end that Geraniums don't have. Of course, you can only see this when they are producing seeds. Pelargoniums are tender perennials and occur naturally almost entirely within South Africa. Leave of true geraniums are usually deeply divided and cut while those of most groups of pelargoniums are not. Pelargoniums also have rather thick, succulent stems, originating as they do from areas where they have to withstand summer drought, whereas geraniums have the appearance of 'normal' herbaceous perennial plants, a mounding form of many many slender stems arising from a central core, and fibrous roots. Plants sold at garden centers that are labeled "Ivy Geranium", "Scented Geranium" and "Zonal Geranium" are actually three different species of pelargonium. Some names that true geraniums are commonly known by are "Hardy Geranium", "Geranium" and "Cranes Bill".

Neat pics and updates, buggy! They definitely show how important and impactful different microclimates are for our plants! I have some bougies that had branches having over the patio that are fine, but the branches hanging out over open ground got zorched by the chill. Some of my blooming mother of thousands Bryophyllums (formerly kalanchoe) melted and some look perfect, all depending on location. The results are amazing. Yeah the Lachenalia blooms really DO look like aloe blooms don't they? There's even a species L. aloides that is even more aloe-looking. Great easy bulbs here though for sure. My geraniums (Pelargonium) plants all did fine, here's that pot pinky purple in the day of the dead talavera pot on the patio. It had petunias in it, and they survived the frost too, but they were getting leggy so OUT they went, hah! Speaking of bryophyllum, here are some that didn't melt, happily blooming away among some Opuntia quimilo cacti. Some clones of this Bryophyllum just three feet away were liquified by Jack Frost. Orange emu bush, Eremophila carnosa looks great too. Definitely my favorite emu bush: Here's just a random corner of the garden, looking WSW. No damage from the recent chill that I I can see. It drives me insane each winter, LOL, by the way, that a purple hop seed was mixed in with the green hop seed when I planted that hedge, hah. Thanks for the responses.
I'm sure that my cutting flowered before it developed roots.
The potting mixes I always use are brand names (Yates,Searles etc) not 'own brand' or unbranded. Depending on what I'm planting I buy regular or premium.
I was hoping someone, possibly a geranium fancier, might be able to tell me something specific I could add to the soil.

You could try adding a dose of potash once a week (twice a week if in pots), this is supposed to improve the colour.

About the yellowing of the leaves, this sounds like the disease rust. Sounds a bit late to save one of the plants but it can spread to the others. Try spraying with a fungicide.

There is a Pelargonium & Geranium Society in Qld. and it might be an idea to contact them and find out if they are having an exhibition during the year. They will always be able to give you good advice.

Thanks for the advice Anna. Yes, I think I will contact the Pelargonium & Geranium Society. I actually bought some of my plants from their exhibition a few months ago.

dear amelie My candy striped ivy leaf pelargonium often comes out with different coloured flowers on the same plant though I have noticed that white pelargoniums [or the white stripes]will turn pink under heat/frost stress or when the potting mix is depleted.
