Pandanus sanderi

Does anyone know if the pandanus, 'Pandanus sanderi' will grow in the subtropics , and is it available in Aust? I just purchased the 'William Warren' book titled "The Tropical Garden" and I just love some of the plants in it.

The variegated Crinum,Dwarf variegated heliconia,the banana tree with burgundy leaves and the Bali agave.

Are there specialist nurseries that stock these plants?

The Pandanus sanderi appears to have no spines which would be a plus. Thanks for any replies. Don

I think it may be taboo to have the banana in Queensland, perhaps someone in the know can tell us. Coral Coast may know about the pandanus.

I did an experiment several years ago to see how effective a humidity tray might be. I'll share my results and anyone considering using one can decide whether or not it's likely to be useful. I had a small tree in a 6 x 9 pot and figured it needed more humidity. I bought a 9 x 15 humidity tray, added enough washed peastone to almost cover the bottom, then nestled 4 medicine bottle caps into the stone to position the plant on, thereby preventing a pathway through which the water in the tray could make way back into the grow medium. when I was done, there was a layer of peastone that fully covered the bottom of the pot, with enough water to cover 1/3 - 1/2 of the larger stones. I was sure to see the capillary pull of the stones was enough to ensure the stones were entirely wet, which increased the wet surface area from which water could evaporate by a factor of at least 2-3X. Once situated, I wedged a digital hygrometer in the branches. After taking readings for 2 days, the highest RH reading above ambient levels was only .4% (4/10 of 1%) greater. Since the level of RH in the room in the mid to upper 20s, the air was nowhere near the point where evaporation would be expected to be low due to air saturation, just the opposite. Also, some of that .4% increase in RH would have been due to normal transpirational water loss through foliage. Oh - we have hot water heat, not forced air, so air movement was limited to normal convective currents, which would tend to better hold any humidity gained from the tray nearer the plants. I decided that a .4% increase wasn't worth the effort and scrapped that idea. Now, if you had say 20 humidity trays, it might make some difference, but a humidifier is indeed the way to go. I make my own from a few fairly inexpensive parts and they work extremely well. A, tub for a reservoir, small static fan, and an ultrasonic fogger/ mist maker is all that's needed, though you can by devices that allow you to adjust the volume of water put into the air, fan speed, and the humidity levels/ parameters. Cheryl- This is one of the rare plants that Brian or Travis couldnt positively ID with 1000% certainty. As you mentioned, this is a rare circumstance! But, based on what others have said and some internet research, I am pretty sure that it is Pandanus sanderi in a non variegated form. I love going to this nursery and have become quite friendly with Brian and Travis. Their selection and prices are unreal. Thus, much of my yard is filled with palms and plants from there. Its also only about 5-6 miles from my house and I pass it on the way home from work everyday, so I have a convenient excuse to frequently stop there :-) The problem is, my property is the typically small new construction lot, so I just cant plant everything I see at Redgraves that I would like to without my yard turning into one thick mass of jungle!

The larger size will be a matter of water. Although they can be surprisingly drought tolerant they do like a lot of water, even soggy conditions. The pups should be okay if cut off close to the trunk and allowed to dry off a bit (the cut that is). Reduce the leaves. I'd start them in pots first so they can be kept in a sheltered place and then plant out when established. I've found that cutting pups off usually causes about a dozen new shoots for every pup you remove. Okay, slight exaggeration but you know what I mean. I gather from the thread title yours is the prickly variegated one (Pandanus is synonymous with 'pain', although a couple are not prickly). That's supposed to be P. veichii which is very prone to clumpiness and generally doesn't get so tall. The smooth variegated one is P. sanderi which seems to grow taller than veichii. I have the smooth one but it just recently started producing a green shoot that's growing faster than the others. Not sure what that means for ID or whether the variegation is going to disappear and it's going to revert to all green. Another clump isn't doing that at all.

Sorry but Pandanus and the Red Bannana are a no no in Queensland, yes they tend to escape into the wilds and create much havoc indeed.I think we have enough other intoduced things to contend with at present.Maybe you can find something similar to take there place. I have found a lot of unhappy new arrivals to Qld, that are unaware of all our things that we can not have. If are intending to move to our sunnier climes, please ask / check before you move. Lady moved to Qld built $8000 pond for her Prized Koi and yes the DPI came and destroyed them, Lots of plants are also not allowed in Qld sorry but Rulz is Rulz. Good luck. Peter r.

To grow ornamental bananas in Queensland you need a special permit due to the possibility of them spreading disease.

Pandanus on the other hand are fine to grow in Queensland as there is NO restrictions on them. Pandanus sanderi can be a bit hard to source but yes it has no spines on its leaves and it will grow in the subtropics. I grow a similar but smaller variety Pandanus baptistii (it is quite often confused with P. sanderi but is different).

I know the variegated Crinum you are talking about and I have it growing here. I might be able give you a plant of it if you want.

The Bali Agave is Furcraea foetida is available but can be expensive. I have a few of them growing in my garden.

I wouldn't bother with the variegated Heliconia as it would be one of the Heliconia indica cultivars which don't do too well in the cooler subtropical zones.

Just a bit off to the side on the original question, you mentioned Furcracea Foetida, is this the variegated or plain leaf variety. If it is the plain leaf I have 100s that I can't get rid of

Coralcoast; Andrew , I would love a var. Crinum if you have a spare. I do have a var. Pandanus, a low clumping variety with spines. I think it is called veitchii. Quite nice while small but can get a bit untidy. You itch for days after dividing it! I will give the heliconia a miss, the banana is a no-no, I will ask Santa for the Agave and will have to keep an eye out for the sanderi. Cheers and Merry Xmas to all! Don
