Hi,

Do most Cycads like full sun?

Cycads, from my research full sun is a must when trying to grow them in NSW especially.
The genus Cycas is tropical and thus would dislike being shaded, cool and wet within NSW. I have several species and Im increasing my collection. I plant all Cycas species in full sun where they will not be shaded in the future. Other genera such as Macrozamia prefer full sun-part shade whilst Lepidozamia and Bowenia prefer a part shade however can survive in full sun, but not as well.
If your talking about Cycas I suggest full sun with perfect drainage.
Im just learning too.

Cycads look better where they dont receive late afternoon sun but tolerate full sun if you dont mind brownish leaves in spots

My Cycads are in the scorching sun all day and they are thriving, the same in Townsville too.
I dont have any brown spots on mine either so I must be doing something right.
But I have left them in pots here sitting on the paving as my soil is terrible..Cheers..MM.

Does anyone know if Cycas apoa will handle full sun. We live in Bundaberg. We have two quite large ones and have not been game to subject them to sunny conditions.

HI Tamoure Have a look at the link below, it states light shade.
I am sure I seen them in the Botanic Gardens here last week all understory they were.
I dont grow one of them so cannot give you any more help...Cheers...MM.

Here is a link that might be useful: Cycas apoa

Thank you Mistymorn, I found the site very interesting. Now I know we should not put Cycas apoa out into full sun. I did not think we could but was hoping. We did find it very difficult to get going but stumbled across the secret by accident. Once going they took off very quickly

I was surprised to come across this site, never had it pop up before, we have been into cycads for some years and thought we’d share some of our experience’s with you.
We are on the Mid North coast of NSW have cycads all growing in ground, and as far as the cycas species we have them growing both in full sun and in afternoon sun only and there is no visible difference the only problem you would have with some is that they don’t like frost.
Lepidozamia peroffskyana. We grow them in full sun only and they look magnificent no burning of at all, but even though there is only one species there are some colour variations.
Macrozamia. As with the cycas we grow some in the full sun some with afternoon sun only and again find no difference at all, the only one with slight browning on some tips we found was the fearnsidei which is in full sun for tree parts of the day.
Hope this is of some interest and help to anyone on this group great cycading to everyone.
