Tropical Natives for the Qld sun ...

| Hi All,
Havin installed my palms, only to have the temp in Rocky exceed 40 deg C shortly thereafter, I need some tips :
1. What is the best way to minimise stress for my palms during the really hot weather ? I applied a combination of Aquasol and fish emulsion (cap of each in five litres of water), and I'm keeping the water up to them, but they are showing a lot more sunburn than my natives (bigger and thinner surface area + transplant shock ...).
2. Can you recommend other tropicals (pref native) which can take the midday heat ? Almost everything I pick up says 'Protect from direct sun' - the whole point of my garden is to protect *me* from the sun, not the other way around.
Thanks,
Artie |

| Re 'full sun' : my understanding is that nurseries *gradually* work young plants (palms or otherwise) up to full sun. If I had planted mine in Winter, they would have stood up the recent heat far better than they have. As I said before, the plants I find most annoying are those which need protection from full sun to a certain age, but then demand full sun once established. I can see how that can happen in the rainforest, but its not too flash when one is attempting to build shade from almost nothing. If only all my plants were as tough as my lillypillies :) |

| This is what I read of Livistona Australis,Plant in open sunny position late spring, they tolerate shade but grow faster in the sun.Chinensis as per Australis, apply complete fertilizer.I tend to keep away from plants that don,t survive in the sun,Callistemons do well.I do have anumber of small palms I keep from too much sun,Golden Cane for one.Greencroc. |
