| Hi all
I am so glad I found this website - some great advice here. We recently bought a house in Perth, WA, which came complete with a very mixed up, large, uncared for garden - a gorgeous 4m x 4m frangipani in the front, bird of paradise out of control underneath it, huge umbrella trees (not sure of their technical name), bottle brushes, hibiscus, kentia palm, coco palm (that's gotta go, it will hit the powerline soon), burn tree (not sure of their real name either but they're funky looking), lavenders, roses, prickles, weeds etc. We want to create a more unified look and need advice on whether to go with natives or tropical or can we mix it up successfully? PALMS - KEEP OR NOT?

| Hi Nat....Alexander Palms are self cleaning so they are Ok but O boy do they self seed. Golden Came Palms I would give them a miss unless you really like them. Have a look at the link below plenty of info there on Palms. I have answered your Hibiscus question on another thread |
Here is a link that might be useful: Palms.

| Hi hoping someone can help me with an assignment I am doing in regards to designing a Perth garden(I'm in N.S.W). I need to know the soil type for 2nd line planting and what suburbs that may encompass. If possible also what grass grows best. I am hoping to do a garden that is similar in part to the nature enviroment and was considering putting in a Queensland bottle tree, I know its not native to the area but wanted that Boab feel. I am open to any suggestions in this regard should you understand what I am trying to do.Any good sites that may help my design please let me know thanks for youre time. |

| I would think Spearwood sands? It varies quite a lot from suburb to suburb. try http://www.agric.wa.gov.au/PC_92469.html?s=1001 Grass- One of the modern buffalo grasses, plametto is probably best. Bottletree should do ok, but Brachychriton populensis would be the best bet. Faster growing. Good info here, but watch out for weedy spp. Adam |
