sprouting coconuts - now what?

Posted by kiwilad55 Qld Aust (My Page) on

I have just found 5 sprouted coconuts with fronds about a mtr long. When I plant them out should I bury the whole nut to where the fronts are emerging from or half bury them or what do I do? Would appreciate some help with the correct way to get them going in the ground. Thanks everyone. Kiwilad.

Does not really matter if a little is left up top not covered, after all they have managed to sprout a meter not buried at all, they are very hardy, just make sure when they get planted the sprout in on the left or right side of the nut, not straight up in the air.

As was said the the last post, you don't need to bury the coconut but just make sure that the crown is exposed. Something I do when I am attempting to germinate coconuts is to instead of leaving them on their side, place them upright and half buried in the potting mix. That way they germinated upright and the nut doesn't take so much room in the pots.
