Suitable palms for Wheatbelt area WA

Hi my mother would like to plant some palms in her beautiful garden but she lives in the central wheatbelt WA. They have cold wet winters (with some frost) and hot dry summers. Any ideas?

You could try some of the hardier palms such as those from the Phoenix species (Date palms), Trachycarpus (Very cold tolerant), Washingtonia (Cotton palms), Syagrus romanzoffianum (Queen palm or Cocos as it is known, is a weed in Queensland), Livistona chinensis, Livistona australis, Livistona decipiens, Sabal species.

In shaded or sheltered spots Archontophoenix cunninghamiana (Piccabeen or Bangalow palm), Howea forsteriana (Kentia Palm), Rhopalostylis sapida (New Zealand Nikau Palm).

These are all palms that are generally quite cold tolerant for areas in southern Australia. I don't know how cold it gets where you are but most of these palms should succeed if you can get hold of them.

Andrew.

You should try some Jelly Palms(Butia capitata). They look good and produce edible fruit. Most of the desert palm species should grow well.
