Frost Tolerate Plants and Palms

I live in Regional Eastern Victoria, where we get the occasional frost. I'm looking at planting a tropical looking garden. However I'm finding it hard to find palms and plants that will survive. Can you suggest any plants that would suit my conditions? The area I'm looking at planting is fairly shaded.

An ideal palm would be the Chinese Windmill Palm, Trachycarpus fortunei very frost tolerant but slow growing.I believe some of the date palms are frost tolerant(phoenix roebeleni)and you could try the native cycad macrozamia as well as the native grass tree(Xanthorrhorea australis)which has a slightly tropical look. In addition too palms try Liriope, mondo grass, festuca, phormium tenax and some of the native tree ferns (dicksonia and cyathea)that will provide a tropical theme in your garden. Good luck

Thanks Luke. Also Do you also know anything about Cocos Palms? Are they invasive?

Trace w,
You really need to know what your lowest temperature is going to be in the long term. There are palms which survive right down to winter mimima of -10 or -15C, but as the minimum comes up there are more and more available. Do you get hard frost ? If so, there are not many palms that will survive it. Try this reference: http://www.junglemusic.net/palmadvice/palms-coldhardy1.htm
