Hibiscus out of control

Finally made it to Katherine - the garden here has been very neglected so alot of work to be done. One thing I do need some help with is how to attack the hibiscus - they are totally out of control - long spindly branches - thick round growth-things around the lower branches and generally just gone wild. How would a really hard prune be right back to almost ground level!! would they come away again ok with new growth - they are flowering but just small single blooms on the end of these l o n g spindly branches. Just need a little help with them please. Thankyou. Royce.

I don't know a lot about hibiscus but I believe you are supposed to trim them back by a third in September. I'd guess that a bit more trimmed off should be ok.

I would not prune them to just about ground level.

Try just a half for starters, if they are so long and if that does not look right do a bit more but do try and prune to shape. Maybe you could thin out some of those thick bottom branches.

I have cut mine back by about 1/2 every year and they still flower beautifully...I love getting rid of all the spindly branches!!!

Thankyou everyone for your comments. I did a prune yesterday so will see if I have killed them for sure or if they survive!! cheers. Kiwilad.
