 o
Gardens in the Cairns region ?

Posted by artiew QLD Aust (My Page) on

Hi All,

I'm taking off on Monday week for a brief holiday in Cairns. Naturally, I'll be doing the Cairns -> Port Douglas -> Atherton drive, and I'm sure I'll see some wonderful scenery. Are there any gardens (open to the public) which I should make a special effort to see ? Its uncharted territory for me, and I dont want to return and have people say 'Oh, did you go to the xxxxx garden ? Its probably the best on the Tablelands !'

Thanks,

Artie

Dear Artiew,
If interested, please give me a ring on (07)4093-7691 when hitting Cairns and happy to arrange visits to a couple of private gardens in Kuranda/Speewah area - maybe not the best but pretty interesting. Hope you are visiting the Flecker Botanical Gardens Cairns - always something worthwhile to see and the Yungaburra Markets on Saturday 27th September. Some specialist growers attend but get there early for the treasures.
Safe travelling then!

Peter

Hello Artie,
As an ex-Rockyite, I would be happy to meet you over a cup of coffee and point you in the direction of some of the sights. Send me an email grant@cairns.net.au
No gardens, I'm afraid, but I know where the better nurseries are plus a few good botanical walks, as I know you are interested in natives. You have picked a good time as many of the street trees are starting to bloom. Plenty of Deplancheas in bloom on the streets and hills around Cairns and Tabebuias and Golden Pendas are all in flower. Not to mention the Golden Saracas, and a whole host of natives that the Council has planted in the median strips which are a constant source of enjoyment and intrigue - mainly of "what the hell is THAT plant!", variety. I have both Mucuna novo-guinessis and Stronglodon macrobotrys vines about to bloom in my garden and am looking forward to some fabulous colour in a week or so. They should also be in bloom at Flecker Gardens. I am going there for breakfast Sunday morning so I should be up to speed on what is in flower.

Thanks to all who emailed me - Grant and Peter's posts are indicative of the level of support I have received, and its a real credit to Gardenweb members in the Cairns region. Australians are often portrayed as 'friendly people' in the media, but I suspect that we've all encountered those who wouldnt give you the time of day - happily, it would seem that our little cyberspace community is not among that throng :)

Cheers,

Artie
