Pruning marang, pedalai, durian

Hi. New member from Cairns. My query is in regard to pruning of the above mentioned trees. I have just planted several seedlings of all of them in my garden and am keen to keep them at a manageable height (4-5 metres) for ease, space and also because we get cyclone here.
I have no experience and would appreciate any advice from any that have. Do I leave them til they get to the desired help and then just the top off and keep doing it thereafter.
I have seen jackfruit trees kept like this and assume, being from the same family, that the marang and pedalai should be able to managed the same ??
I found only one brief mention of top pruning durians in my google trolling
Any advice or pointing in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
The pedalai I put in (2) were retrieved from the corner of a shade house and are a bit gnarled and deformed already so if anyone has some nice healthy seedlings around this area I would be keen to buy a couple
Regards Jim

Hi Jim,

be careful with the durian. a friend of mine from Indonesia has durian in his backyard. It grew so big that the root system started to crack the tiles inside his house.

To prune a durian you first need to write to the Atomic Energy Agency and request to borrow a bomb. Seriously, unless you have half an acre to give over to the tree, get it before it gets you. If you have space for it, leave it alone and it will give you fabulous fruit in a quarter century or so.

Hi jimreevescairns, From advice I've been given from various sources. The Durian problematical but the Artocarpus spp.(Pedalai and Marang) can be kept down to a reasonable size buy regular judicial pruning the same way that Jackfruit are. Just exercise common sense and don't leave large cuts unprotected.
