Hi, while pruning some overgrown bamboo I snapped a large poney tail (base about 60cm) :I am left with a leaveless trunk about 1.6m high and a top leaved of about 80cm long. Can I strike the tip somehow. Will the trunk resprout?
Thanks for your help

Mike

Yes the trunk will sprout, I think I read somewhere two sprouts come.
Sorry I cannot help you about striking the tip, I would give it a go after all
If you can take suckers off it, why not the top, mine is 2.4 tall now
So I know how you would feel after that happened, Good Luck what ever you do ..MM

We had a very modest sized one in a tub and its upper stem rotted off in winter. About 6 months later the bottom, reduced to little more than a ball in shape, sprouted about a dozen new shoots around the edge of the rotted area. They are developing very slowly as yet.

I would guess that the broken-off top can be rooted too, but I would be inclined to let it callus for several weeks before putting it any moist medium.

I can confirm Tony's comments. I had a largish plant that our pool guy simply cut off one day, because it was overhanging the pool and dropping the occasional leaf. He left behind the bulb with a stem about 1 metre long. The top was discarded onto the compost heap. After I finished ranting I decided to try planting the top. It grew quite well. Also the remaining stem. It sprouted three new branches and the end result was even better than before, so I concluded the pool guy knew more about Beucanias than me.

Grant, can I ask, please, how you treated the top? Having seen a multistemmed flowering one in a garden mag, I cut the top off mine the other day and gave it to a friend, telling her to let it dry for a few days, then pot. Did I do the right thing?
