Seeking info on cordylines from subtropical Oz

Posted by richtrav (My Page) on

I am from the US and am looking for people who have tried growing some of the different cordylines in the hot and humid parts of Australia. I know fruticosa will grow there and australis generally fails (as they do here), but was wondering how some of these newer types such as Cordyline caruba, nigra or red baueri perform there. I'd also be interested if there are any interesting color forms or hybrids with your native species such as stricta, possibly crossed with fruticosa etc. Thanks in advance

g'day richtrav,

i didn't know any of the cordylines/dracaena's had trouble growing in the humid tropics here in qld they seem to thrive everywhere, to my knowledge most of the fancier ones are indemic to the tropical islands of polynesia and mycronesia.

if you have had problems maybe research soil type/condition or aspect of that growing conditions.

my help probably not much help though so maybe you could post this question over at

If you e-mail me through "my page" (or possibly by replying on this, as my e-mail is not blocked) I will give you contact details for an experienced cordyline grower here in Qld who is willing to answer your questions. Don't want to post her contact publically of course.
