Favourite Ixora ?

| One of the things I am trying to do in my new garden is mix-and-match native and exotic species effectively : the native palms, ferns and shrubs forming the predominately green background and the exotic plants (mainly cordyline, croton, gardenia and ixora) providing splashes of colour. Its hardly ground-breaking stuff, but the huge variation in form, foliage and flowering habit make it a challenge.
Although I initially had a policy of 'nothing-under-a-metre' when selecting sub-shrubs such as Ixora, I find that I am increasingly drawn to the dwarf varieties. I dont have a lot of experience with Ixora, having relied on natives for every layer in the past, so I'm keen to hear feedback from others.
Happy trails,
Artie

Hello Artie, There are several native Ixora species and I know that Yuruga Nursery at Walkamin used to stock some. Kris will probably disapprove, but I reckon the dwarf version of Ixora coccinea is a great small shrub that can be trimmed into hedge. It is a mass of red when in flower. My neighbour has a huge bright red Ixora (don't know the species) that is really attractive to Ulysses butterflies. Grant |

| Thanks again, Grant - I am often disappointed when I rush down to one of my local nurseries and exclaim 'have you got the local species of such-and-such ??!' to blank looks ... some of them have never even heard of the Byfield Fern or the Blackdown Fan Palm - very discouraging. |

Grant Im not that black and white. Artie, can you get hold of Livistona fulva? aka Livistona sp. Blackdown Tableland? Thanks from Kris |

| Kris, I'm afraid not - my sources tell me that the only way to get seed or plants is the 'hard' way. Morally and pragmatically, taking anything from the wild just isnt on. None of this was apparent to me when I initially realised CQ had such treasures : I naively assumed that these species would find their way into cultivation as others (Foxtail, Carpenteria) have. |
