I'm currently renovating and am planning to put 3 palms up through a new deck.Looking at single trunks but wanted to get away from Alex's but need something that I can readily source in or around brisbane.Any suggestions? The plants would have to be around 3-4 mtrs high at planting.

I would suggest using Solitaires or foxtails, both are reliable and native to QLD.

Carpentarias, Veitchia johannis, Veitchia winnin all slender palms that are very tropical looking. Don't know where you will source them in Brisbane but Gardels Nursery at Hervey Bay are very cheap and have these in stock. I bought 2 x V. winnin about 9 feet high for $35 each. Might be worth hitching a trailer on and going for a drive for a weekend.

Like Richard I would suggest solitaires, they are wonderful slender palms and the fronds cause no damage when they fall. I too like the look of Foxtails but the falling fronds with their long bases can do a lot of damage to small plantings underneath. Also once they start fruiting they are forever in fruit (In Ipswich we had over 20 of them in the garden)and the inflorescence with fruit attached weigh a ton. Coral Coast is spot on with Veitchias and Carpentarias. I too recommend Gardel Nursery. You will save a mint, and have a nice drive as well.

Carpentarias are nice but not native to Brisbane area, and look little different from bangalows, which are Brisbane native. Livistona australis is another local native you could consider.

Black Palms or the Foxtail palms are nice.
