Seems none of "my mates" knows, soaht, and as I certainly don't garden in U.S. zone 3 I dunno either! I've just planted out a grafted black (or purple) one, p. edulis, I think, and I'm regarded as about zone 9, warm temperate to sub-tropical. It's looking ok so far, I planted it on the basis of suck-it-and-see; shove it in the ground and if it grows, flowers and fruits, great. If it don't nothing ventured, nothing gained. My neighbours grow a yellow variety but I don't like the taste of that one, besides it gets a bit weedie. My only advice, soaht, do the same with your red and gold, if it performs great, if not...... !

I'm a US zone 9, but thought I mention it equals to Australia's zone 3 on that link I posted above. It's subtropical in my zone and hardly ever sees any frost or freezing temps. Thanks, i'll just give it a try and if it lives till maturity, i'll get fruit, if not it's a lesson learned. BTW, your neighbor must have the passiflora caerulea(blue passion fruit/maypops). It does produce, not really yellow like the other known yellow Australian kind, but a orange/yellow color, oblong, oval shape fruit. If it is, what, I describe, then it the p. caerulea, which is not very tasty or have much pulp. As, i'm aware your grafted black, could have been grafted onto the p. caerulea rootstock. Which is a very hardy passiflora, native to the US eastern coast, where it gets snow yearly, dies in winter and comew back very aggressive. CAreful with your grafted, black if it is indeed grafted on the p. caerulea root stock, it will sucker like crazy in no time, if not kept under watchful eyes. Nellie Kelly's nursery, in Australia, uses the p. caerulea as root stock for their grafted passion fruit vines, so be sure to know where your grafted plant from. Have read on Daleyfruit forum, how many stories of people's grafted Nellie Kelly's plant went suckering out of control after a few years. Good luck to you as well, if your is a Nellie Kelly's plant, just watch it carefully, or soon you will not have the grafted plant anymore, due to the root stock suckering below the graft.

Thanks for that soaht, I've planted it where I can easily keep an eye on it. I do know how they sucker, there's a wild passionfruit vine on the border between me and my neighbour and I simply can't get rid of it, it has trifoliate leaves and it scrambles over everything, even up and over my 8 to 9 metre (about 12 to 15 feet) photinia bushes - I just let them grow for privacy. The damn passion vine just climbs through everything and I've hitted it with Zero 490 (stronger glyso. than standard Roundup), pulled it out, whatever, and it still keeps coming back. Never produces a fruit though, and only ever seen one or two flowers. Bugger of a thing, but that's life, ya learn to live with such things.

looks like that, wild passion vine in your neighbors yard might be the Australian native banana passion fruit vine(if it produce oblong missile shape yellow fruit, then it is), if it produce an almost hollow/soft green round fruit, then it's the native Australian passion fruit vine. I don't know either of the correct name for those two natives species, but Google and you'll see, what I mean. The native green round fruit, looks to be a little more rare, if it is , then you might want to save a few seeds and try selling them online. I've seen ebay auctions, for the native green fruit seeds, and they are rather expensive. either way, wow they are tough plants to get rid of, if what you tried using, is stronger than roundup, to no effect. Guess, you might just want to keep pulling the suckers up, till their is no more, but that is going to be a long battle, but eventually, you'll get rid of the darn pest plant. BTW, if it's a mature established plant, then it's tough all around even with chemical. Good luck to your quest of growing your new grafted vine and getting rid of the wild vine.

Thanks soaht, I'll take my camera out tomorrow and click a picture of the leaf - as I said I haven't yet seen a fruit on it. As for glyphosate (excuse spelling) it kills it off back to a node, I think, and even when I've cut a thickish stem (up to almost an inch think and paint the end with pure glypho) it helps but the growth and the site make it difficult to get to every sucker. Proper id might help though, I had a look at my grafted plant and it too has trifoliate leaves, I guess the whole species and, of course, all the varieties do. But I tell ya, this bloody thing down the back is one of those 'you'll- never-get-rid-of-me' type plants. A bit like Wandering Jew (or as they say now-a-days wandering 'dew'). My problem is it suckers into a bed I have of Lamium galeobdolen 'Herman's pride' I've nurtured along for years and when I rip up the suckers it pulls up some of the lamium. Trials and tribulations of gardening, I guess.
