I always read how wonderfully easy these plants are to grow and how tough they are. Well I can assure you that if I have anything to do with them they will not flourish and are more likely to die. I do not know what I am doing wrong. I have tried to follow suggestions in books etc but still have no luck. Does anybody out there have any hints and suggestions for the succesful growth of these plants?

They resent disturbance so planting time can set them back quite a bit. I've read that to plant them you virtually need to cut off the pot-base, plant the whole pot in the ground and then gently easy it off and back-fill. Once established, adequate water but not too much fertilizer. I had a qhole tribe of them in planters in my front drive-way that was full sun and very hot and they loved it. I see a yard in the area that has lots of minis growing in a mixed garden bed and trimmed down and they do fabulously. I think maybe just be patient and then you'll be pleased, we hope. |

in their natural habitat, they like it on the dry side during winter... really dry... and full sun. I have seen them the size of a house in the Yucatan... I think the soil is really well drained. They get a lot of water, but they aren't sitting in it.

I have 3 indoor in the patio. They are in 14" pots with Ferns around them. I only water these everyweek and feed them spring and fall. Well drained, full sun is the best way to grow them outdoors. They grow along pavement in the tropics, Just like weeds for them. They have a resting period in the summer where they will stop blooming for a while but give it some time. Mealy bugs also love to invade these while there outside FYI. Good luck with them they are beautiful plants.

Hi Greathawks. I have twenty five Bougainvillea's plants growing, four of those are just small that I grew from cuttings last October but three of them have already flowered. I have three bambino's in pots watered every week, more often in the dry hot windy days.I have five Weeping standards also watered every week except in the Winter when they are flowering I dont do them as often, then there is all the others that just sit there looking pretty in the Shade and the Sun at different times of the day. I have tried growing a bambino in a hanging basket, with no success so I put that one back into the ground and its ok now. But they are a easy plant to grow, can you tell us how you are growing your plants then we may be able to tell you what you could be doing wrong. Maybe you are watering them too much, maybe not enough, do you fertilise them at all that will help. I only fertlise mine after I have pruned and then only when I see the new growth coming through. Hope this helps. Cheers..MM
