Palms diseased?

Hi all, we planted 6 Kentia and 6 Alexandra Palms in our new tropical garden two years ago and they are just not thriving. Several have new growth emerging with black, curly fronds. Is this a fungal problem. We also planted Majestic and Jelly Palms in the same area and they look great! The Golden Canes have a bit of black spot but they are growing well regardless.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thankyou
Kym

RE: Palms diseased?

Black curly fronds on new growth sounds like Frizzle Top. It's caused by a Manganese (Mn) deficiency. Some palms are more suceptible than others but if left untreated it will lead to the decline and death of the palm. See the following for more information.

Your palm needs Manganese Sulfate (NOT Epsom salts, that's Magnesium Sulfate) Follow the label directions.

Regular use of a Palm Special fertilizer should prevent the problem from coming back.
