Removal of Immature Fruit from Cocus Palm

Once the cocus palm has begun its berry production can you remove the pod and/or the immature berry bush before it matures? Once it has matured it is heavy, and in hot weather begins to ferment, stink, and mess up the surrounding area with the dropped berries.
