| Hello there,I live in Bunbury about 200km from Perth, and once again,Im going to attempt to grow a cuban royal. I have noticed that the roots in the pot are exposed by about 2 inches should I leave them like that when I plant it? Any other advice on growing these would be much appreciated. Thanks Jenny |

| In your climate I wouldn't plant it yet. Resist the temptation keep it in a warm position and wait until spring to give it a better chance of establishing. If you are going to do any root trimming don't do it now with the weather cooling off as it could prove fatal. Andrew. |

Thanks Andrew, about the roots though, they are actually exposed at the top of the pot not comming out the bottom. It looks like it hasnt been planted deep enough; at the base of the neck. I have only just bought it from the nursery. The palm is only about 1.5m tall. Hope that explains it a bit better.By the way Im so jealous of your garden, sounds fantastic we are also trying to achieve a tropical look. Cant seem to get hold of a coconut palm over here though no one seems to sell them. Thanks for your help Jenny. |

| g'day jenny, when you do plant them out just cover all those exposed roots, and even part the way up the trunk as the palm will grow new roots from there which will help stabalise it and tease out some of the other roots before back filling the hole . for me though unless you get frosts i would be thinking that maybe they could be planted out now. use a good layer of mulch around the palm but not right up to the trunk this will keep the ground warm and moisture in. len mail len lens garden page |

Jenny, You could possibly plant out now but I would strongly advise against it. I do it here but with your cooler temperate climate I wouldn't. At least if you do it in spring by the time the next winter comes back around the palm will be much better established and more capable of coping with the cold. Best of luck with it though. I tried growing Cuban Royals down south when I stationed with the Navy in Nowra, NSW. I wanted a tropical garden to remind me of home but the poor things didn't fair too well (Neither did many other palms). Andrew. |

Hi Forget the cuban and the coconut, your too far south, why not try kentia palms, bangalows, trachyacarpus, beccariopheonix(almost identical to a coconut, but will take the cold.) Also try the rhapis excelsa all these take the cold and the winds. |

| Ah, the irony of it all - at the moment, I am admiring photos of southern trees in their autumn finery, and wishing I could replace my Cuban Royals with something similar ! I have 2 of approx 20 metres each in my front garden here in Rocky. The day will come when they will suffer the same fate as my coconut palm - torn down before they injure someone. *Way* too big for the front garden, IMO, and I dont particularly want them in the back either. Golden cane, cascade and bamboo palms are far better choices, at least for me personally. |

The roots do burst out of the trunk but it doesn't seem to do them any harm (quite a number of other palms do this, including the lovely bangalows. If you bury the roots they will just burst out again later. Tony |

| I have seen Cuban royals growing in Kalamunda near Perth so I think they should go alright in Bunbury. |
