Strelitzia - Bird of Paradise flowering early

We planted a strelitzia just over 12 months ago in a temperate climate and it has nice new growth but it has tried to flower twice in the past 3 weeks. Isn't it only supposed to flower in spring? The flowers only open up about 1/4 of the way and then shrivel up and die. Is it stressed? It is well watered but it has been very warm here (up to 35 degrees in the past week). The bottom few leaves also look as though they are curling slightly. Please help. Thanks.

I don't know about only flowering in Spring, they've been flowering since Spring here. I can't offer any reasons for the flowers shrivelling, though, sorry.
