 o
bougainvillea ?

I have a plant that I thought was grown from a deep red bougainvillea cutting. This year it has grown to about 1m with very large (21 X 14cm) leaves....not at all like bougainvillea leaves. My leaves are paler green & leathery, but not at all shiny. The stem of the plant is quite sturdy, not requiring any support at present. Is this a normal immature stage for a bougainvillea or have I struck something else altogether?

RE: bougainvillea ?

HI and Welcome....Sorry but bougainvillea leaves are not that big.
The Biggest ones I have are 11cms long to the end of the point and 9cms wide.
Have a look at these pics..Does your cutting look anything like the plants or leaves.
I have 23 different ones and there are a lot of leaf variations
And what about thorns does it have any..Hope this helps ....Cheers..MM.

RE: bougainvillea ?

Thanks for your assistance. The cutting I originally took was definitely bougainvillea...just like your shots. I thought I had lost the cutting as it was in amongst a lot of pots. When I had a really thorough tidyup I thought I had found it.....I repotted it & it took off with our nice hot summer. The plant I now have doesn't resemble anything that I have ever taken as cuttings. Although the leaves are very large, the shape is very similar to your shots. Texture & colour also quite different. No there aren't any thorns and although it looks like it is a rambler type of plant rather than a shrub, it is self supporting at the moment. I hope I can keep it safe during Melb's winter and see what the next year brings.
Thanks again & yes I will start to label all my cuttings :)

Byeo.

RE: bougainvillea ?

Hi again and thanks for the e-mail..You can take hardwood cuttings in late Autumn and Winter.
Why dont you have another go if you can get a piece..If it has no thorns then its a sure sign its not a boug ..
Good luck with whatever you do and when your plant does finally flower let us know.... Cheers...MM.
