 o
Bamboo in a courtyard area

A friend recommended clumping bamboo for the side of our courtyard area (western facing) but I have heard it becomes messy easily and sheds a lot of leaf litter. Is it easy to keep bamboo looking good? Are there any other problems I should know about? I have also heard that the fibrous roots are water seeking and can block pipes. Is that true with the clumping varieties? I am considering China Gold, Golden Stripe or Alphonse Karr as I don't want something that would grow more than 4 metres.

I eagerly await your replies :-)
