Bird of Paradise seeds help

Posted by josiegirl Brisbane Aust (My Page) on

Hi All, does anyone know if Bird of Paradise (strelitzia reginae) seeds need any pre-treatment before planting? The seeds I have are black and very hard and have fuzzy orange stuff attached to them. Was wondering if they may need to be nicked or soaked. I've never grown this before, so would appreciate any help.
Cheers,
Josie

no treatment needed , just sow shallowly in sandy media .
a very easy species to grow.

I tried unsucessfully to grow them from seed. Until I read that the seed should be soaked for 24 hrs and up they came.

I brought some of these back from Mexico many heears ago and had good luck with planting them. I had also lost a few seeds and dropped them down in between some boards under a deck while I was sowing them. There they fell into sandy humid soil in an area of very sheltered light and they germinated without any assistance with out any problem. I think the most important thing is to have fresh seed. Good luck.

I want to get a bird of paradise flower OR bird of paradise seed to give someone for their birthday. Do they really take 3-5 YEARS to flower? Any tips?

I found some information on:
