Sloanea coppicing

| I have heard that if you can cut a Sloanea back they will coppice freely. This allows one to enjoy the flowers a bit more easily. In fact it has been suggested that they produce very good sprays for cut flowers. Has anyone done this or seen it done? |

Hi Robert, Many Elaeocarpaceae have a biological mechanism for asexual growth. Ive seen many of the species suckering and producing basal shoots forming extensive patches of just 1 tree. They all grow from cuttings with a little skill. Ive got an Elaeocarpus johnsonii grown from a cutting it has brilliant bell flowers and is only 60cm tall. For floral arrangments-Great idea that should prove popular. From kris |

I have a S. woolsii that suffered wallaby attack when young, and while the main trunk recovered it did coppice to some extent as well. Tony |
