Bamboo in Pots- A long term prospect?
| | |

| I have tried bamboo in pots in the past and have found that within 2-3 years they start to go downhill.
I currently am growing B. lako in pots. Only 12 months since planting from a small piece of stem, they are already 2metres high, but very thin as yet.
How can I make pot culture sustainable ? |

Chris, Put them in as large a pot as possible(with top quality mix),bamboos seem to know when they have more room to spread out,and will produce much larger shoots this way.It is vital the water is kept up to them,i would water every day in warm/hot weather, also small regular applications of high nitrogen fertiliser will help. I would have thought your climate may be a bit dicey for B.lako as it can suffer a little in winter although will soon leaf up in spring. In pots i would recommend Lesser Buddhas belly (B.ventricosa) or in shaded pots out of wind Himalayan weeping bamboo (Drepanostachyum falcatum). Good luck |

Thanks Richard, I suspect you are right about dicey, because the B. lako lost its leaves last winter. We got down to +2C Any suggestion for a black bamboo which will grow down here ? Or what about B. vulgaris vittata ? |

Phyllostachys nigra (a black runner)i think, should do nicely in pots in your climate, most runners are from colder climes originally.B.vulgaris vittata is not really suited to pot culture(in my humble opinion) it just doesnt seem to look happy, when i have tried it. Good luck with your Boos Chris. |
