 o
Heliconia utopia ?

Our local Nursery have some of these for sale. I checked through my Heliconia Bible and Google and can find no reference to it.
Has anyone heard of it, or is it a new hybrid.
Says it's a Caribaea/Bihai cross?
They want $45 for it so it would want to be pretty good for that money.
Any info would be appreciated.
Ian

I would insist on seeing a pic of the flower for that price.
Many of the Heliconias available down your way are seed grown ones and you never know what you will get , or if they will ever flower. Better of buying from a grower that has flowered them in your climate . Michael

Many of the caribaea/bihai crosses do well is SE Qld and there are many tried and proven varieties to choose from. I think I know which nursery you are talking about as I visited it when I was in Brisbane over Christmas. If it is the same nursery I can tell you now that the Heliconia plants and some other plants there are very overpriced.

There's a Heliconia specialist at Yandina that has them for about $12 for a 200ml pot.(www.bloomnkiamba.com.au)
Worth a look at the site for it's images.

I think I also know what nursery you are talking about - bit of a rip off since they usually only buy the stuff in and not even grow it themselves - if you get a chance if your up the sunshine coast on a Sunday the Maroochydore markets there are a couple of growers who peddle their wares their, I am usually up there once a month and picked up last week Hot Rio Nights for $12 not starting at $25 like some want to charge. Most seem passionate about them and one has a brillant book which I have never seen before with about every cross you could imagine.

Steve,
That book would probably be HELICONIA An Identification Guide by Berry and Kress. Very good book and Heliconia growers bible. I think it is out of print at the moment.

This may have come from Utopia Palms , worth asking the owner . Try the web-site contact.

Steve, I just received my copy of Heliconia an Identification Guide 6 days ago from Amazon.com. It cost me $19 us + postage.

Check out heliconias.com.au.Growers are coming to Brisbane soon to sell plants.

RE: Heliconia utopia ?

Do you know the name of the cross? Make sure the grower has flowered it first. It is common for people to buy the same plant under several different common names and then start to sell it without actually seeing it flower. If you let me know the name I'll check it out for you. Newer varieties do cost more money and while it may be worth it for a 'collector', it maynot be a better landscaper or cut flower.
