Hi Lynne - to key this one we need some extra info:

1. Photo of the dried capsule (capsule shape helps ID Eucs)... look on the ground and find some old ones
2. Photo of a general leaf showing general shape and veination .. also let us know how long and wide the leaf is.
3. Photo ... really close up of the flowers or more importantly the buds just after the flowers have died
4. Feel the bark and tell us if its soft or hard, pull some off and decide if its flacky or stringy, also when you pull it off what colour is underneath
5. Now have a close look at where the leaves are located in comparrison to each other ... are they opposite, like ones on one side of the stalk and the other is directly opposite or are they alternate, one on the left, then one on the right, left, right and so on. If you cant work it out take a photo.
6. ... finally ... a rough description of your geographic location coast/mountains/nth qld/sth qld/nth nsw/central nsw/sth nsw/vic/wa/etc as many Eucs are territoial little beasties!

give it a shot .. otherwise we feel like we are trying to describe a spiral staircase without using our hands!

RE: What eucalypt is this

Thanks tonyw. I will be visiting the tree in the next week so will get all the info required and add it to the post. The tree is at Sweetmans Creek which is between Wollombi and Millfield (Cessnock)

I guess the Euc is part of the local flora, so I suggest you get hold a plant list of the local flora and go from there. Council of NPWS would have one of these lists.

I find a process of illimination useful in these situations !

I have been to Wollombi, lovely area.

An educated guess (without keys)...rough-barked apple gum (Angophora floribunda)...very prolific in your area.

I fell in love with Wollombi years ago when I detoured there mistakenly (alright, I got lost!) on a drive between Mudgee and Newcastle! Magnificent location!

Regards,
Shax

Hard to tell from the photos of the leaves if they are alternate (Euc) or opposite (Angophora)however the last photo with the fruit does tend to indicate that the nuts are going to be ribbed in which case its a pretty good chance that shax is correct and it could be A.floribunda. Bark, habit, leaf shape, flower all key out for that species.

Here's a link to info on A.floribunda: http://plantnet.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/NSWfl.pl?page=nswfl&lvl=sp&name=Angophora~floribunda
