Black Kangaroo Paw seed collecting

| I posted this before but it did not appear for some reason.....
Anyway, I have a lovely Black Kangaroo Paw in flower and am wondering where the seeds are located, and how I best collect them. The plants seem too difficult to source and I'd like to keep this going....
I assume I then just let them dry out a little bit before sowing???
Thanks

| Macropidia fuliginosa propagation from seed is very unreliable. |

| I'm aware of that, but its worth a try. I will be dividing the rhyzomes up (if thats what they are called) to get a couple of plants, but want to try the seed since its in flower. Can you actually assist with the question on hand? |

| Actually, I've been interested in knowing how to gather seed from kangaroo paws, so if anyone can help Judith with this one I'll be happy too. Roy |

The seeds of Kangaroo Paws are located at the base of the flower, where there is what looks like a swelling. Finger pressure will tell you that it is firm and when shattered between the fingers you can see the segments which contain the seed and some chaff. Place the drying old flowers in a paper bag to finish drying off and squeeze the base of each flower to break it apart to obtain the seed. According to Murray Ralph's book on propagating from seed, the seed of Macropidia is viable for 8 years. However seed is difficult to germinate. Soaking seed in hot water for 15 minutes may improve results. Natural weathering of seed sown in a pot has been successful with seed germinating in the second autumn following soaking. Smoke treatment has not been successful. |

| Mallee, thanks very much for that - top info indeed. I look forward to giving it a try. |

| Martin - As Mallee has stated, soaking the seed may help with germination. Also, try smoke or smoked water which will simulate a bush fire.
