White fungus - hoop pine

Posted by Jane_23 SE Qld Aust (My Page) on

I am having a problem with one (of about 30)of my hoop pines which is about 12 yrs old. I have noticed a lot of dieback on the branches, and, with closer inspection, there is a band of white fungus around the trunk about 2m from the ground. Above the ring of fungus the trunk diameter is wider - really odd. The one about 2m away is showing some signs but not as bad. It is too wet (wow.....) to take photos.

Hello Jane

Sounds perplexing...you have got me thinking about my hoop pine, it has been dropping so many fronds, I am beginning to think mine has a problem too. I have noticed a lot of sooty mould on the plants under this tree, which suggests an insect is doing something.

I will investigate further...look in my books.

You must have a big place to accomodate all those pines!

I wonder what others will say.

hello there your hoop pines will be too wet and the fungus you describe sounds like armilaria... try a drench of fongarid arounf the base of the trunk and give seasol... no guarantees but this will bosst its imminue system

Thanks for your replies. I have done some checking on web sites and the symptoms of armillaria seem similar to what's happening here. It was so dry over winter/spring and then we received a few inches of rain plus I pruned off some lower branches to mow under without being stabbed in the head. Perhaps the open wound let the fungus attack the tree. I should be more careful in future and coat the bark. Jane
