Is it a good idea to use an old septic tank to store water from the laundary and shower for the garden

It's better to put the water directly onto the garden. Storing it allows nasty bugs to grow in it. I do this with shower water using a gravity feed - very cheap. With laundry water, I've been told to dispose of the wash cycle because there's too much soap in it, and only use the rinse cycle.

Earth brand washing detergents seem to be OK on the garden. According to www.lanfaxlabs.com.au this brand is among the ones with the lowest content of sodium or salt per wash. And you only use a very small amount of it in a large volume of water.

The raised pH is not that much of an issue as my soil contains a great deal of compost and mulch. This produces humic acid as it breaks down and the humic acid will largely neutralize the base in the wash water.

I have been spraying both the wash and rinse water over the gardens for a couple of months now with no side effects so far.
