Community Nursery - ideas please
| | |
Posted by Popi NSW Aust (My Page) on Thu, Dec 29, 05 at 1:00
| I am thinking of setting up a community nursery at my place. The idea is to grow plants from seed collected in local bushland, and on my property.
I would like a setup where local people, or interested people can come and assist in the propagation and nursery chores. The plants will then offered for sale, to cover costs etc. I have a site at my place, but would need to install some shadehouse, stands etc. Plenty of water.
Can anyone point me in the right direction, to see similar models of this, or any other ideas would be most appreciated.
Thanks. |

| I think your best bet would be to contact Landcare, Greening Australia or your local Council to find out about grants and information on this subject. We have a Community Nursery like this in Ringwood called C.R.I.S.P. (Community of Ringwood Indigenous Plant Species Nursery). Even they may be able to give you advice. You can find them on Google. Good luck with this project, I think it's a terrific thing to do........Cheers, Dee. |

| Like Dee,we have a very similar nersury in the Redlands area (bayside Brisbane)only it was set up by the Redlands City Council & is run by volanteers & payed staff. It's fabulous to be able to obtain plants that are indiginous to our own area. Wonderfull idea & wish you every success! Cam. |

| A great idea - City Farm has two nurseries, Gympie & Tin Can Bay. We apply for funding from Cooloola Shire Council and provide free trees for the Rates Program. Ususally, you need to be under the umbrella of an incorporated body to obtain funding, ie Lions, Rotary etc. It might be possible to lobby local businesses for "in kind" donations for shadehouses etc and have a list of those who donated items in a prominant place at the nursery so they get free advertising. You may encounter problems having the nursery on private land (for the purpose of grants). Anyway, now I have said all that, it is amazing what people have stored in their sheds, and with some enthusiastic people, anything is possible. Good Luck !!! |
