Propagation of natives

Hi,
I've just purchased 5 acres and will be undertaking a massive planting programme in due course. Because of the numbers involved I will be doing the majority of the propagation myself. I've many years of nursery work under my belt in the UK and have done a lot of propagation up in the northern hemisphere. I was thinking of a poly/shade house with a mist unit. If there are any experienced propagators of native plants that can give me their thoughts on the matter I would be very grateful.
many thanks Jan

RE: Propagation of natives

I wouldn't think that there were many native plants that would require a misting system, unless you were trying to grow rainforest plants in arid Australia or local plants from cuttings.

Presumably you intend to propagate local native plants from your own property and surrounding areas, in which case the seedlings will be adapted to growing under the local environmental conditions. Just stick with the shade house but perhaps do away with the misting system.

All the native plants I have been propagating from south eastern and south western Australia can be watered by the bog method rather than over head sprays. The trick is to allow the potting mix to dry out a bit before you re-fill the trays with water. I find that using the bog method makes for far more efficient use of water (particularly over summer) and for more uniform watering of the pots.
