| Today I purchased a grafted Brachychiton acerifolius from my local Native Nursery.
The tag said that it grows to 3m tall. I queried this with the owner of the nursery and she said that because of the grafting process it kind of bonsai's the plant, much like how the grafted gum trees, e.g, "Summer Red" are much smaller than their original parents. Is this true?

| My guess is that what you have is a plant whose scion comes from a dwarf form of a flame tree. The reason for the graft is probably to make sure that the tree does indeed grow to much the same size as its parent (whereas any attempt to reproduce the dwarf parent from seed might result in a "throwback" to a large form). The graft would also ensure that the tree flowers well from an early age. If it seems to have come from a reputable supplier, I think you should trust his claims, and sit back and enjoy! Cheers, Trish |
