Mine is about 7 years old. It has just finished flowering and is looking pretty staggly. Can I prune it or will it not take kindly to it? I have no idea about pruning but I have a friend is expert on it but doesn't know anything about the plant itself.

If by pruning you mean removing the spent flower spikes that's not a problem, I regularly cut off long flowering stems and it only improves it. I have not had call to do any heavier pruning but most proteacae will accept a moderate to heavy lopping.

Thanks for the response. It is growing over the fence and has substantial branches in the neighbours yard. We have chopped it back a little and it seems ot be responding quite well.
