Native plant stops termites munching

There was an article on ABC On-line about this (see the link attached).

I e-mailed the guy interviewed for the article:

Associate Professor Robert Spooner-Hart
Director, Centre for Horticulture & Plant Science
University of Western Sydney
R.Spooner-Hart@uws.edu.au

He told me the plant is the false sandalwood (Eremophila mitchellii)

Here is a link that might be useful: ABC story

Sounds promising. Let's hope that it all works out. It's good that more and more natural products are being found to do these jobs safely.

I heard about this on the abc and the report went a bit further than the article and said they had impregnated some timber with the extract from this sandalwood and set out out some treated and untreated posts in an area in NSW where termites are bad, after two years the untreated posts were crumbling and gone and the treated ones were still intact so it is looking promising

I agree that this sounds fantastic - LandLine mentioned it briefly at the end of last weeks episode. Given the implications for East Coast residents, particularly Queenslanders, I'mm sure we'll hear a lot more on the subject.

Speaking of LandLine, has anyone else noticed how polished this program is ? A lot of 'current events' programs, even on Aunty and the SBS, have become increasingly sensationalist and grating (largely with the focus on terrorism), but LandLine has retained its focus on delivering stories in an unhurried, professional manner, often backed up with magnificent shots of the Aussie bush. Whilst stories on developments in cattle breeding dont exactly have me leaping off the couch with joy, even the more mundane stuff keeps my attention long after ACA / Sixty Minutes and co have me reaching for the remote. Well done, LandLine - if only there was more TV like this.

I agree Artie, it's a great show. We try and catch it every week if we can. Most informative and professional.
Cheers,
Dee.
