Gardening Australia Live

Went to GAL today with my SO. I had a good chat with Josh Byrne, listened to Peter Cundall bouncing around and joined the carnivorous plant society at last!

It was good to hear Greg Boyles bouncing about indigenous plants, and congrats to him for getting bronze with his show garden!

Anyone else go?

Sorry, Nathan - I made the mistake of going to the Brisbane rendition last year, and I wont be going again. Too crowded, too expensive (for something that is basically a trade show) and too many exhibits that were short on foliage and long on advertising. I couldnt find a single GA identity, and left in under an hour.

Overall, I've had a more enjoyable time at my local nursery on a Sunday afternoon. Such events (the Brisbane Hot Rod show is another in the same vein) suffer from an over-abundance of rubber-neckers and far too many trade stands. People turn up because they 'saw it on TV', not necessarily because they have a genuine interest in the subject. Still, I'm pleased to hear that you got some value from it.

art, I think your criticisms are valid - there were too many trade stalls (and usually the same ones you see at other similar shows - expensive super-mops, hose winders and hose unwinders, various glittery things of dubious value). The trade stalls that might have been interesting (native nurseries, unusual species etc) were notable by their absence.

The things I did like were seeing all the plant clubs (bonsai, genus and family specific clubs etc), listening to the speakers and talking to the 'personalities'.

the show gardens were a little thin on the ground and the use of standard nursery sized plants gave them a rushed look.
