Definitely a case of not happy Jan for this geraldton wax. I may have been overwatering to compensate for dry conditions. Is there any hope?

Eeeew, that's not a happy plant. I have to admit to being new and a big learner when it comes to natives but here are some tips from my trusty wildflower book:

They like a warm to hot climate, open situation and sandy or gravely soil. They are supposed to be reasonably trouble free provided they are not planted in acid soil.....or given too much water.

That's the best I can offer you and have no clue how to test acid in the soil. However I have a few bushes myself, all planted in hot dry sand, with very little water and they are beautiful.

I would wonder if the mulch on top is having anything to do with your problem, maybe too damp?

Best of luck, Marie

RE: Geraldton wax 'Rescue Me'

Hello Jan,

Your page states that you live in central Qld. Firstly, if you are on the coast, it will be a humid area,(with wet summers). That's not going to suit the Geraldton Wax - it will most likely have died of root rot disease. Even Brisbane is difficult for it. Secondly, your area may just be too hot too - Geraldton is about the same latitude as Brisbane and Toowoomba.

I live in the Toowoomba district and have successfully grown them (though the first one I planted years ago died after a magnificent flowering, after a couple of years). The climate here is not as humid as, and a little cooler than Brisbane, and we have well-drained soil mostly.

BUT, you can buy grafted Geraldton Wax now. I think that would be worth trying in your area, though it's more expensive to buy these. (None of mine are grafted, though I have thought about buying such.)

Best of luck,
Frank
