Hi gardewebbers

This is a follow up to what should I do. My oleander, banksia, melaleuca and cardwell leptospernum are not doing as well. Is this due to too much shade. The area has mulch and lots of worms and is watered every three days for 1/2 hour. The pleander is on right side of picture, I thought they were supposed to be tough and fast.

hi jan, I dont know the answer but you could be right about the shade. oleanders are real sun lovers and they grow in the hottest poorest soil in my garden, heat and sun just dont phase them at all. Ive also grown a melaleuca from seed and it's 2 years old and about 1 1/2 metres tall now, the trunk has gone from thinner than a pencil when I planted it in the garden to about the size of my wrist, and I can usually see some difference in it every few weeks so it's a fairly quick grower, but Im having a hard time getting it to grow straight because even though its in a sunny spot, it keeps wanting to lean and twist to get the maximum amount of sunlight it can

It could well be too much water. If they are mulched I would be watering them around once a week.

Banksias and Oleanders like it on the dry side.
